Party Like A Parrot... Just For Starters

With the use of this section, my intent is to bring you some useful information that may give you some ideas on how to “treat” your pets with something different. One of my passions is obviously Parrots, so it’s a good place to start.

Many of you have parrots – the more common bird of choice. However, there are over 350 varieties of these magnificent winged creatures - Macaws, Amazons, Lorikeets, Lovebirds, Cockatoos – just to name a few. Parrots are naturally found in warm climates, such as South and Central America, Australia – where you will find the most varieties. Even though they have many similar characteristics, there is still a great diversity among these birds. All parrots have curved beaks and four toes on each foot (two pointing forward and two backwards).

Throughout time, parrots have been companions to humans who crave what they have to offer – intelligence, charisma, creative coloring, musical abilities, and another voice in the room to talk to. The African gray parrot that lives in the rainforest is the most accomplished user of human speech in the animal kingdom.

Just like people, though, certain foods appeal to some and not to others – fruit, flowers, buds, nuts, seeds, and some small creatures such as insects. When caring for your feathered friend, take care to not harm your bird by not providing the proper room temperature and making sure whatever food ingredients you create their meals with are salt (sodium) free, as well as sugar-free. Wash all raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly!

If you are new to the Parrot world or even if you are looking for something different to feed your feathered friend, in the articles to come, I will provide recipes, Do’s & Don’ts for food ingredients, and other tips. Don’t worry, I have not forgotten dogs, cats, hamsters, sugar gliders, fruit bats, hedgehogs, and so many other precious creatures – they will all get equal time.
